<p>To load this Zillions Saved Game file you must first extract the "Chess with Different Armies" Zillions rules file, cwda.zrf, and the Alfaerie images into your Zillions folder (extract: <a href="../index/zillions.php?itemid=zcwda">cwda.zip</a>, author: Peter Aronson; see the associated files below).</p> <p>This game was played in the 2003 Multivariant Play By E-Mail Tournament. John Lawson played White. Michael Nelson played Black. Black resigns on move 22. See the above illustrations of Black's moves 9 and 20, referenced below.</p> <p>Nelson comments to Lawson, "I have no countermove to your impending Bede h5xh7 mate. Thank you for an excellent game. Beautiful sacrificial mating combination, I didn't see that coming. A game the winner can be proud of and the loser need not be ashamed."</p> <p>Lawson comments, "I had wanted to choose the Remarkable Rookies for myself, but Mike picked them first. I believe the Rookies to be strong in the endgame, so I picked the Colorbound Clobberers as likely to give me the best chances in the middle game. The move that caused Mike to have trouble with divided forces for the rest of the game was move 8, when I got a pawn on the fifth rank. I was able to concentrate pieces on the King’s side more quickly, and I saw that 20. Cardinal d1-e3 provided some surprising threats. Most of Mike’s possibilities at that point seemed awkward for him, but I was keenly aware of the limitations of my pieces. After Mike’s 20…. Woody Rook g6-h6, I found the mate, which I had not anticipated. Had I been Mike, I would have chosen 20…. Pawn h7-h6."</p> <p>Nelson replies, "My real mistake was 9...Pawn c7 -c5; I should have played Pawn c7 -c6 then exchanged pawns. John still ends up pawn on d5, but it will be harder to defend. I might have salvaged a draw (having made the mistake on move 9) by sacrificing a minor piece to break up John's pawn structure. John's suggested move 20 prevents the mate, but I have a lost game anyway.
