I am not surprised that this was widely recognized among many as the standard form of chess at one time. It seems more logical than FIDE chess as the amazon combines all three minor pieces, whereas FIDE only combines a couple of them. What seems more surprising is that FIDE version became more prevalent. Could be a fluke of history.
