While it's easy enough to guess your intention by looking at the Shako and Balbo pages, this page should mention the powers of the elephant and cannon, pawn starts and promotions.  (I guess castling is pretty obviously out.)

The rules have been updated for elephant, cannon, and Pawns.

@wdtr2 Thanks for mentionning me. It would help to also include why, but maybe that's not crucial :)! Have fun!

This game makes for a fine blend of two already interesting games.

At first when playing I felt like I was starting out missing an important pawn, but then I remembered that in chess, the Exchange Variation of the French Defence can produce plenty of interesting and decisive games, even between strong players.

@wdtr2

Can pawns promote to anything when they do promote?

Also, my name if Florea!...

This is an excellent chess variant, and is one of my favorites. I think it plays better than either of the games from which it is derived. The starting position is carefully considered, allowing a wide variety of different openings.

The rook should still be worth slightly more than the bishop on this board but it is very close. I performed the mobility calculation. With a 30% board occcupancy, the rook's average mobility is 9.8 whereas the bishop's is 9.2. And the mobility of the rook increases faster than that of the bishop as the board clears out.

Just a small correction while reading the rules: it should be written "En passant" not "En passent".

I am invited to play Shako Balbo but curiously when I try it says This invitation seems to be for someone else.

Since I'm not sure what's going on, I added some diagnostic information after the error message you got. Try it again, and let me know what it says.

Hello

Now, I got this:

This invitation seems to be for someone else. $userid, which is , does not match $opponent, which is timurthelenk. $userid, which is , does not match $_SESSION["userid"], which is timurthelenk.

This tells me that $userid has an empty value, yet in the tests I've run, $userid is normally the value entered in the userid field of the form. I'm not sure why you would be getting a different value. Are you using a form with the userid field filled in?

What I see is this: A Personal Invitation for Jean-Louis Cazaux to play shako_balbo.

I am invited by wdtr2 I see in his personal information that he his marked as "dead" in the database. Could it be the root cause of the problem?

Is all you see a line of text?

He is not marked as dead. Only his email address is. His account still works.

Could it be the root cause of the problem?

It seems unlikely. The problem is that $userid has a blank value instead of "timurthelenk".

If you have plug-ins in your browser, like privacy or ad blocker, try turning them off. I doubt it will help, but worth a try.

Leave it up, so that I have something to work with to debug the problem.

🕸Fergus Duniho wrote on Wed, Dec 30, 2020 01:25 PM EST in reply to Jean-Louis Cazaux from Tue Dec 29 04:22 PM:

In the elseif clause whose code should have run, I replaced references to $userid with references to $_SESSION["userid"]. Since its conditional will evaluate to true only when $pass is true, $_SESSION["userid"] should always have a non-empty value whenever it is evaluated to be true. So, try accepting the invitation again.

When providing information on bugs, it is best to be clear and detailed. Did something go wrong that you weren't expecting?

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Thu, Dec 31, 2020 03:51 AM EST in reply to Fergus Duniho from Wed Dec 30 05:04 PM:

Sure, what I wanted to say that it was not saying anymore that I don't correspond to the invitation (so, it was better), but as I was now assigning with Blacks and couldn't start and I couldn't check if it was all OK.

This morning, my opponent who launched the invitation, started also the first move and I have been able to play my first move as well.

So all looks good now. Thanks a lot for your support.

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Tue, Jan 12, 2021 03:03 PM EST:

My feelings about this game are mixed. On the positive side, I like very much the idea that the variant Shako has its own variant. On the critic side, I am not so enthusiast and I keep preferring the standard Shako. In play, I found that diagonals are too much weighting on the game. I had the feeling that Rooks, Cannons and even Queen were sort of squeezed on this diamond-shaped board. It is not because I lost that I'm negative. I lost because I'm not a good player, I'm not focused enough. No, regardless of defeat or victory the fact is I was sometimes kind of "I don't know what to play", if I could, I would have simply passed my turn as I had the feeling that any move would spoil my game. I think that I would have the same impression at Balbo (std) chess. But I appreciated to have tried, it was interesting to see the difference with a square board. Thanks
