I don't seem to be able to reach the play.chessvariants domain. A popup
message appears that questions if I want to download the file.

   /play/pbm/index.html

Looks like it may be that the cause is the .htaccess file. I will look
into it.

This problem has been fixed. As David points out, it was the .htaccess
file. Updates to the server software changed how it behaved. I deleted the
file, and html pages can now be accessed from the play subdomain.
