Check out Balbo's Chess, our featured variant for October, 2024.

This page is written by the game's inventor, Claudio Martins Jaguaribe.

Knightless symmetric chess

The idea of a chess variant with two queens always had bugged the mind of everyone, but we always hitted the same wall, the bishops.

To eliminate this problem I replaced the knights with other two bishops.

As the game became a litte curious in the 1st and 8th row I changed the 2nd and 7th too.

Setup

Here is the setup:

9 RBBQKQBBR
8 wffmmmffw
7 ---------
6 ---------
5 ---------
4 ---------
3 ---------
2 wffmmmffw
1 RBBQKQBBR
  abcdefghi

Pieces

R, B, Q, K are the FIDE.

w- wazir;
f- ferz;
m- man.

Rules

The same rules as FIDE, but there is no en passant capture or initial double step, the castlig is the same.

Notes

For those who want knights and didn't liked the use of ferzes, wazires and men, here is a 11x11 setup.
