Actually the name was chosen by HG!

I thought it was from Aurelian's Grand Apothecary Chesses?

It could well be. My memory, as I've stated many times, is pretty wretched.

Zombie Pawn: Moves (with capture) one space directly or diagonally forward, or moves without capture one space directly behind. Any piece that captures it and stops on its square immediately becomes a Zombie Pawn (but doesn't change color).

I clarified this, essentially the same way but expanding a bit more.

I'd love to make the Reaper and Mummy also immune, and there's probably some way of doing that, but I'm not sure what. If there is, maybe H.G. can chime in to help.

I guess the Vulture's move description isn't too problematic, except that the ID move does not match up with it. It should be mHnFXnNY.

Well, that's definitely a "kink." I think I miscounted or something. I changed the ID move as indicated.

I think the piece is an invention of Lev's; if it's the description that should've been changed, hopefully he'll speak up.

A. M. DeWitt wrote on Sun, May 12 09:57 PM EDT in reply to Bob Greenwade from Fri May 10 01:07 PM:

I believe it does not. I only set it up; H.G. will know how that functions. Logically, it should apply to anything but rifle captures (and Ghosts and Reapers [I think you meant Vampire here] would be immune), but I'm not sure how to set that up.

Well, if you mean that the contagion applies to anything but rifle/locust captures, then the diagram has you covered already (this is logically equivalent to it applying only to capture that stop on the victim square). In the current ID setup, the pieces that have rifle/locust captures (Vampire, Ghost, and Hangman) only transform when they stop on the Zombie Pawn's square.

This can be made a little clearer in the Zombie Pawn's description, but that is really simple. Just add the underlined text at the spot it appears in.

Zombie Pawn: Moves (with capture) one space directly or diagonally forward, or moves without capture one space directly behind. Any piece that captures it and stops on its square immediately becomes a Zombie Pawn (but doesn't change color).

What further kinks are with the Vulture?

This piece currently moves like a Copper General in the ID. Did you mean fhKbmW?

Yes; thanks for the catch there.

Also does the contagious capture only apply when the capturer stops on the Zombie Pawn's square?

Other than that and the fact that the Vulture's kinks need sorted out, this looks good.

There may be other inconsistencies that I have yet to discover. Other than that and the fact that the Vulture's kinks need sorted out, this looks good.

Daniel Zacharias wrote on Thu, May 2 02:47 PM EDT in reply to Bob Greenwade from 01:57 PM:

It doesn't. I wouldn't understand how it moves without the interactive diagram. I'm thinking something like "moves to the squares (1,4) by making exactly three orthogonal and one diagonal step in any order, all in the same direction." Even that doesn't clearly exclude a move that only allows a single turn in the path

💡📝Bob Greenwade wrote on Thu, May 2 01:57 PM EDT in reply to Daniel Zacharias from 01:54 PM:

It would be easier if the vulture's description specified which paths it is allowed to follow. Maybe I'm the only one this is unclear to.

Hopefully the little bit of text I just added helps, at least a little.

This one's still awaiting review.

(I do hope to have it ready by Halloween....) ;)

This does appear to be ready for publication.

The sons and daughters of darkness run amok on occasion all year round. However, arguably at least as much damage is caused by crooks or mass murderers (some being politicians), and they make the news, by themselves causing a lot of people sleepless nights.

Florin Lupusoru wrote on Sun, Feb 25 04:47 AM EST in reply to Bob Greenwade from Sat Feb 24 10:04 PM:

Or I can write the rules and you will provide the graphics because you are better at it.

Let's call this "Titanic Chess". If you agree with the name then you have a deal. When I get a chance I'll start working on it. I believe that a 16x16 or 20x20 board should be enough.

💡📝Bob Greenwade wrote on Sat, Feb 24 10:04 PM EST in reply to Florin Lupusoru from 09:42 PM:

I might just do that or something like it at some point, though "Greater Dragon Wars" will be up first.

Florin Lupusoru wrote on Sat, Feb 24 09:42 PM EST:

It's Halloween, and the monsters are out in full force. And some of them don't get along.

If you knew what is really happening during Halloween you might never sleep at night. But we are not allowed to talk about that.

Next on your list should be a chess variant called "The Battle of Titans" and use all the monsters from the ancient Greek legends. You already have the Cerberus, then you can add the Unicorn, Hydra, Medusa, Titans (or giants), Half Gods (or demi gods), Prometheus, Neptune, Zeus, Hera, Athens etc. and all the hybrid creatures you can find.

So, what do you think?

💡📝Bob Greenwade wrote on Thu, Feb 22 11:10 AM EST:

I think that this variant is ready for review. (Not for publication yet, until I move the ID to the main article.)

I'm open to suggestions for more monsters for the second row, and opinions on the suggestion that Florin already made (which I'm still considering).

💡📝Bob Greenwade wrote on Mon, Feb 19 10:30 AM EST in reply to Florin Lupusoru from 02:46 AM:

That's worth considering, though it would take a little extra juggling. Note that all of the second-row pieces can jump the Pawns, but the Ghosts will lose that (at least, for the first move) unless they are also moved forward.

Florin Lupusoru wrote on Mon, Feb 19 02:46 AM EST:

This looks interesting. But I would push the Pawns one, or two, ranks forward in order to speed up the game.
